About the Artist:
Thomas Rose received his MA University of California, Berkeley. His current selected work, from the series’ The Chinese Pictures and The Garden Pictures engage in his current themes of “a sparse theatricality and architectural simplicity.”
Rose’s work explores architectural fragments and the ambiguities of space and place that represent time in material form — 18th century garden follies, ruins, and old architectural plans, each with their attending fictions and veiled truths. Rose uses fragments of materials and images to construct tactile spaces and fictions to create places that can be experienced.
His multimedia work is in the collections of many institutions including: The
Hirshhorn Museum, Washington DC;The Getty Institute, Los Angeles; the School of the Art institute of Chicago; Whitney Museum, New York; The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis; and the Weisman Museum, Minneapolis.
Rose has received grants and awards from many sources including: the McKnight, Bush, Jerome and Rockefeller Foundations, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Institute for Advanced Studies, and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
Rose is a professor in the Department of Art and Fesler-Lampert Chair in the Humanities at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
