FIGMENT is a grassroots arts effort that has already taken other towns by storm, including New York, Boston, Pittsburgh and Detroit. Now, FIGMENT DC is proud to announce that its inaugural debut will be held at The Yards Park. This free, participatory arts festival, put on by the community and for the community, promises family-friendly fun, wild creativity and smile-inducing interaction. Audience members are invited to join in with their own contributions.

With over 70 art project submissions, there will be no lack of fun-filled activities to go around. This year, FIGMENT coincides with the SW Waterfront Arts Festival as the two are collaborating with a bike parade on M Street, connecting the festivals. A sample of projects that will grace the Yards Park includes The Big Trike, a 200 pound vehicle, made of recycled materials including steel, aluminum, brass, PVC and wood, that accommodates one rider and up to four passengers. Paul Sikora, whose mobiles have graced international dignitary buildings, hospitals and Artomatic, will be delighting crowds with workshops and hanging mobiles. And Branden Hall’s BlitterBike, an interactive, bike-towed, light sculpture built into a 32×32 pixel grid, will be making the rounds. These and much more await participants and artists alike.

“If Figment were a country, it would be the happiest in the world – and I would apply for citizenship immediately,” stated Brad Cohen, travel blogger for the BBC. He continues, “In every city, FIGMENT is about local artists coming together to build a temporary community, where smiling people are willingly launched into interaction with the art and each other.”

FIGMENT, a free, family-friendly participatory arts event held in multiple cities and attracting tens of thousands of participants each year, is coming to D.C. on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 for its first kick-off in The Yards Park in Southeast DC.
