In the solo works and collaborative project that make up The Points That Bring Us from Here to There, Michael Dax Iacovone and Kathryn Zazenski map spaces and experiences. Iacovone’s The Mississippi River Project: Record of a 3600 Mile Drawing, chronicles his journey driving across the 123 bridges that span the Mississippi River. In a selection from her ongoing Memory Maps series, Zazenski presents maps from time spent in Haukijärvi, Finland, Washingon, DC, and Beijing, China. From Here to There: Ezra Pound brings the two artists’ diverging interests together in a project that examines the history of Anacostia. In their research Iacovone and Zazenski discovered that poet Ezra Pound spent spent 14 years confined to the Psych Ward at St.Elizabeth’s Hospital, which lead to the genesis of a collaborative dialogue between the artists that manifests as maps, diagrams, drawings and photography.

Iacovone is interested in formulas and creating systems to generate art. A co-founder of the Free Space Collective, he has a BS in Photography and Art Education from the State University of New York, an MFA in Photography from Virginia Commonwealth University, and an MFA in Studio Art from Maryland Institute College of Art. His work has been exhibited internationally in Sarajevo, Belgrade, Budapest, and London. Domestically he has exhibited in New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Orlando, Baltimore, Washington DC, among other places. He has lived and worked in Washington DC since 1999.

Zazenski uses the constructs of language and the physical act of communicating to explore the seemingly rigid structures of organized systems. She received her BFA from the Kutztown University of Pennsylvania in 2004. She has participated in various artist residencies, collaborative projects, and arts’ events in both the US and abroad. Internationally, her work has been included in exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, and Helsinki. She has also participated in various group and two-person exhibitions through out the US including Washington, DC, Baltimore, Miami, New York, Seattle, and Jersey City. Kathryn is currently living in Michigan and is a 2014 MFA candidate in Sculpture at the Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Iacovone and Zazenski met in April 2011 as participants in a panel discussion at Hamiltonian Gallery about community involvement in art practices. Zazenski was then an ARCH Artist in Residence in Anacostia and Iacovone is an alumnus of the 2008-2010 Hamiltonian Fellowship. Their collaboration grew from that initial meeting.
