On Saturday July 19, 2014, Cheverly, MD based artist Ellen Cornett won the inaugural Brentwood Arts Exchange Project America’s Next Top Master Artist with a first prize of $500 and the opportunity for a solo exhibition in the gallery, late summer 2015. Cornett endured three grueling rounds of elimination.

In the first round, judges Jose Dominguez, Tuliza Fleming, and Gerald Ross selected the roster of 18 artists who started the competition. For the next two rounds, the public voted via text message.  “Pure democracy” declares Phil Davis, Acting Director of the Brentwood Arts Exchange.  “Ellen had a fairly resounding victory in a field of impressive vote counts.”

Cornett had no idea how far she would go.  As Cornett explains, “I was excited to be chosen and really impressed by my fellow contestants. The work of the other artists was very strong and I thought I’d be fortunate to survive round one of the voting.”  And survive she did, all the way to the final round, to win the competition.
