The efforts of local DC artists, cultural organizations, and the surrounding arts community promote the sustainability of a creative livelihood within the city. ARCH will recognize artist Rik Freeman for his contribution to the expanding artistic landscape east of the Anacostia River. Freeman earned his first mural commission in 1989 and currently works from his Ward 7 studio, where he continues to integrate the structure and character of the city into his art. Through his narrative painting, Freeman explores the interstitial relationship between society and politics, with a particular focus on local communities, cultural traditions of storytelling, oral history, and kinship. Freeman will receive the third annual East of the River Distinguished Artist Award, including a $5,000 prize, on July 18, 2015 at Honfleur Gallery.
