In their continuing Saturday morning gallery artists series, Addison/Ripley presents a conversation with Isabel Manalo and Christopher Addison, a discussion exploring some of the cultural aspects of the artist’s work as well inspirations, influences and practices. Unscripted, Naturally is a apt title for Manalo’s first exhibit in Washington since returning from several years with her family in Berlin. Combining the fast paced spontaneity of social media and the deep connections with a proud heritage, the paintings in the exhibit are richly layered, bursting from the confines of their frames, ranging from tiny, delicate even, to monumental scale.

Unscripted, Naturally brings together Isabel Manalo’s love for language, calligraphy, collage and the process of abstract expressionism all together in this new suite of paintings as a dedication to her cross cultural heritage and identity as a Filipino American. During the talk they will discuss the artist’s linguistic influences, from Baybayin to Sanskrit, examine her continuing collaboration with and support for a wide community of other artists, through her startup, The Studio Visit, and walk through the exhibit with her.

The gallery is located at 1670 Wisconsin Avenue NW.
