ARTIST STUDIO RESIDENCY

Join a thriving community of professional artists in the Montpelier Resident Artist Program.  These artists work in a diverse variety of media and styles, maintain studio hours for the public to visit, and participate in community events. These artists are selected by an annual jury panel and exhibit their work in the Montpelier Arts Center’s Resident Artist Gallery on a revolving basis.

Individual studio spaces at Montpelier Arts Center are located on the first floor and the second floor.
The printmaking studio is a shared workspace on the first floor.

Eligibility To be considered, artists must be at least 18 years old, and reside in Maryland. Residents of
Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties will take precedence over others.

Requirements Listed below are the required application materials:

  • Completed application form (on reverse).
  • CD containing digital images of 10-20 pieces that exemplify your body of work, with the titles, dates, and dimensions of each works. Images must be in JPEG format at a minimum 300 dpi.
  • Current résumé, artist statement, and biography for each artist looking to rent.
  • Letter of intent stating reasons for applying, what you hope to accomplish through/during residency, how studio space will be used, and any special projects you would propose with Montpelier Arts Center.
  • Three professional references, their relation to you, and their contact information.
  • Resident artists may share studio space at Montpelier. However, each prospective resident artist must submit an individual application package for review by the juror.

Entries must be submitted by 5 pm on Monday, May 19, 2014 at Montpelier Arts Center, 9652
Muirkirk Rd, Laurel, Maryland 20708.

Artists expecting submissions returned must include a stamped, self-addressed envelope for returning entries. Montpelier Arts Center will not be responsible for retaining entries not accompanied by return packaging beyond the conclusion of jurying. Awards Each selected artist will be granted a one-year lease for rental space at Montpelier Arts Center. Montpelier resident artists may hold solo exhibitions in the Resident Artist Gallery once every two years.

Deadlines:

  • Monday, May 19, 2014: Entries must be submitted to Montpelier Arts Center
  • Week of June 2, 2014: Applicants notified of jury results.
  • Tuesday, July 1, 2014: New leases begin at Montpelier Arts Center.

EXHIBITION PROPOSALS

Montpelier Arts Center is pleased to invite artists to enter its annual competition to select 4-6 two month-long exhibitions to present for the 2014-2015 season.

Juror: John Paradiso
John Paradiso earned a BFA degree from the State University of New York (Purchase) and his MFA degree from the State  University of New York (Buffalo). He is a mixed media artist and describes his work as metaphorical and based upon such issues as identity, sexuality, health, and love. He has work in private and public collections, including the Kinsey institute and a portfolio of seven photographs in the National Picture Collection at the Library of Congress (AIDS portfolio).

Paradiso is the program manager at the 39th Street Gallery and the Facility Manager of the Gateway Arts Center in the Prince George’s County Gateway Arts District. In this capacity, he manages 30 artist studios and provides arts programming, including exhibitions, artists talks and workshops. He also manages the Gateway CDC Artist-in-Residence program and supports the Gateway Arts District artist community. The 39th Street Gallery and Gateway Arts Center are owned and operated by the Gateway Community Development Corporation, North Brentwood, MD.

Awards An honorarium of $300 will be presented to each exhibition.
Eligibility— Artists must be at least 18 years old to be considered, and reside in Maryland.

Requirements Listed below are the required application materials:

  • Artist statement & biography.
  • Current one-page résumé of all artists to exhibit.
  • CD containing at least 10 digital images that best exemplifiy your portfolio/proposal. Images must be in JPEG format at a minimum 300 dpi.
  • A proposal of no more than one typewritten page, double-spaced. Specify the preferred month for your show, and include a second and third choice.
  • Mail entries to Montpelier Arts Center at 9652 Muirkirk Road, Laurel, MD 20708.
  • Artists expecting submissions returned must include a stamped, self-addressed envelope for returning entries. Montpelier Arts Center will not be responsible for retaining entries not accompanied by return packaging beyond the conclusion of jurying.
  • Deadline All entries must be postmarked by Monday, May 5, 2014.
