Bourgeon magazine announces the 3rd Annual DC Student Arts Journalism Competition, open to undergraduate students in DC area colleges and universities. The competition aims to identify talent and encourage excellence in the field of arts journalism.

“The competition was founded on the simple belief that, just as the arts are important to the whole human experience, arts journalism is a critical and under supported part of the journalistic sector,” said Bourgeon Founder, Rob Bettmann. “By promoting arts journalism, we hope to provide another vehicle to connect artists and audiences.”

The competition is open to students from all academic backgrounds. Submissions must be entered by April 30, 2013. Five finalists will be selected by the Bourgeon Editorial staff by May 21, 2013. All finalists will be published in the magazine. A panel of professional critics will choose the winner, who will be announced in early June, 2013. The winner will receive the award and a $100 cash prize.

There is no fee to enter the competition. Only one submission per entrant. Additional submission guidelines as well as examples of past winners are available on Bourgeon’s website.

Bourgeon’s mission, through our online publication and community initiatives, is twofold: to increase participation in the arts and to improve access to the arts. Bourgeon serves as a bridge builder between contemporary artists and audiences.

Bourgeon is a project of the nonprofit Day Eight. To see more about Day Eight please visit www.dayeight.org and visit the magazine site at www.bourgeononline.com.
