JUROR: Allison Nance joined international Arts & Artists in 2013 as Director of Hillyer Art Space. Prior to this she was with the Torpedo Factory Art Center from 2008-2013. She co-founded Microwave Project LLC in 2010, a curatorial partnership that acts as a conduit between artists and businesses, exploring alternative exhibition venues with an emphasis on site-specific installation art. Allison is Vice-Chair of the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, whose role it is to advise City Council with regard to policies that would strengthen the arts and further public access to the arts and cultural matters. She is the Chair of the Commissions Grant Committee, and for the last three years has worked on the Commission’s Annual Work Plan Task Force, outlining which new public art projects the city of Alexandria will initiate, indicating where the projects are located, and what the proposal budgets will be. Allison joined the ArtTable in January 2016, and is currently the co-chair for the membership of the Washington DC chapter.

Washington Sculptors Group (WSG) and Glen Echo Park Partnership (GEPP) will collaborate on a Sculpture REMIX: Craft/Technology/Art exhibition in 2017. The Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, Inc. manages Glen Echo Park, a lively visual and performing arts site in the Washington, DC area. Established by Montgomery County in 2002, the Partnership is a nonprofit organization charged with managing Glen Echo Park’s arts programs and facilities, including its historic buildings. The Partnership’s mission is to present vibrant artistic, cultural, and educational offerings at the Park, and to promote the Park as a unique destination for the region’s diverse population. In collaboration with Montgomery County and the National Park Service, the Partnership works with resident artists and organizations to develop distinctive arts programming. The GEPP is to exhibit the work of emerging and established artists. New exhibitions are presented every four to six weeks. Many of GEPP resident visual artists and organizations also have galleries where artwork is displayed and for sale, including the Yellow Barn Studio, J. Jordan Bruns Studio, Photoworks, SilverWorks, Glen Echo Pottery, the Art Glass Center, and Glassworks.
ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to members of the Washington Sculptors Group only. Artists who are not already members may join WSG by paying annual dues of $45 ($15 for full-time students). Prospective members may download a membership form from the WSG website, www.washingtonsculptors.org, and send checks, along with the membership forms, to the WSG address, or may join online through PayPal on the WSG website. WSG members must pay their dues for 2017 to be eligible for this exhibition.
WORK TO BE CONSIDERED: Sculpture REMIX 2017: Craft/Technology/Art is a material and process-thematic exhibition. Sculpture Remix 2017 invites new works by WSG members, finished within the last two years. Works submitted should use processes that are hand crafted, or industrially manufactured, or displayed through digital formats. Building and constructing shared principles across these fixed boundaries has the ability to create poetic juxtapositions for cooperative projects with local artists who could connect to innovative, long-term partnerships with other “makers” in the DC, MD and VA areas.
Three-dimensional freestanding sculpture, wall-hung and ceiling-hung sculpture, installations, as well as “New Media” and performance-based works are eligible for submission.
Glen Echo Park is very busy on the weekends with families participating in the various events in the park. To expand the audience interested in the exhibition theme, WSG members are encouraged, but not required, to propose a child-friendly activity or an adult-oriented workshop or panel discussion as a supplement to their proposal. The activity may be held in one of Glen Echo Park’s classrooms, the Bumper Car Pavilion, the Ballroom Back Room, or outside in the park, subject to availability. Proposals should describe the activity and space requirements and how the activity relates to the theme of the show and their proposal.
Basic technical and installation support will be provided by GEPP. Video, sound or other technical equipment must be provided by the artist. The art may be finished or in the form of a proposal by an individual or an art team. We highly recommend that artists visit the space if they wish to submit installations, site-specific work, or a proposal. ENTRY DIMENSIONS FOR DELIVERY OF ARTWORK: A loading area is available. All sculptures must fit through the entrance doorway. Wall work must hang directly on the walls, and artists are asked to combine the design of a pedestal into the design of their work, which will allow the work to be freestanding. Walls have electrical outlets.
Artwork may be suspended from ceiling, but will have a weight limitation of 10 lbs.
Artists are solely responsible for delivery and installation of their accepted work on the installation date of Sculpture Remix 2017, and de-installation of their work on the pick-up date. GEPP staff will be available on site to assist artists with installations. All work accepted and exhibited must remain on display for the full duration of the show. WSG and the GEPP will not receive shipments of artwork or mail inquiries.
SALES AND COMMISSIONS: a commission based on the listed sales price of the work will be applied if the work sells either during the exhibition or as result thereof. GEPP takes a 30% commission on sales. Interested buyers will be directed to the Exhibition Director, and she will in turn work with a WSG representative to notify the artist involved.
INSURANCE: GEPP will insure work while on site, but NOT during transportation to or from the venue. Onsite insurance value will be computed as 75% of retail price, but does not guarantee that the insurer will agree with the value assigned by the artist. Selected artists must sign a loan agreement provided by GEPP to be insured.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE AND SPECIFICATIONS: All images, videos, etc. and accompanying info will be presented anonymously to the juror for review. The EntryThingy software will allow you to submit a statement about how the work you are submitting relates to the exhibitions requirements. It will also offer you a chance to provide a brief description of each work along with a title, dimensions, etc. To avoid being disqualified, do not include your name in either the statement or any of the description paragraphs. No mail or email entries will be accepted.
Artists/Artist Teams may submit up to five images of finished work (one work or different works) or artists can also submit a proposal that is accompanied by (4) four work samples of past projects, or photos of drawings of the proposal. The written proposal must be submitted in a 350-word essay. Please create the document in Word, and upload it as a PDF file as you would upload a photo. Take care not to state your name or the names of your team in the written proposal. The juror will obtain all names of the artists or artist teams involved after jurying.
Artists will make their submissions on the website www.Entrythingy.com. Submit all images with a resolution of 300 dpi with a maximum of 2MB each. Video files are limited to at most 50MB each (about five minutes).
