Opening Reception: Thursday, February 18 from 6:30pm to 8pm
Takefumi Hori is a Japanese artist based in New York. The vibrancy of the city as well as the abundance of material wealth influences his art. His aesthetic elements combine energetic brush strokes and surface scratches to mirror the hard edge of the city with shimmering gold, silver and copper leaf that represent financial prosperity. For Takefumi, the works are more than simply a reflection of the city in which he lives. Juxtaposing his aesthetic elements with the calm serenity of classically uncomplicated geometry and composition, he seeks to contemplate the balance between man and our surroundings. For Takefumi, these pieces are a study in the way mankind harmonizes exterior affluence with a simplified internal equilibrium, all in the search for the sublime.
Takefumi’s aesthetic combinations and the search for the sublime result in paintings that are both arresting and captivating. His fascination with contemporary life in a modern metropolis alongside a more philosophical concern with the nature of aesthetics allow him to create canvases that do more than search for the sublime, they uncover it’s essence.
