In conjunction with an expansive retrospective exhibit at the Katzen Arts Center at American University opening on June 17th, this exhibit of the artist’s work at Addison/Ripley includes works from the artist’s estate and from the gallery archives that span Lewton’s long career.

Val Lewton captured an urban and suburban ethos in his work that sometimes merged with his love of a road trip. His trucks and suburban sprawls, his demolished and rising constructions and his color filled examinations of the tops and sides of building are iconic. One might guess that he had been raised in California, the son of a film director from his scenic views of unlikely vistas, cropping vehicles and structures in cinematic framing.

Included in this exhibition are paintings on canvas and works on paper from 1970 up to the last year before the artist’s untimely death. Lewton was a close friend and early mentor to the gallery and these combined exhibits are a glance at a long, full career in the arts and a distinguished Washington artist.
