Academies at Anacostia students will be hosting a photographic exhibit where they will exhibit photographs completed as part of a semester Long Be The Change project.

In partnership with Critical Exposure, a local youth advocacy and photography non-profit, the students have spent this past semester learning how to use the medium of photography to advocate on behalf of issues facing them and their community.

In weighing the most pressing issues upon which they could have a more tangible impact, the students chose to speak out in favor of more educational opportunities at their school.  With more available electives, the students argued, the students’ education would become more engaging and, in turn, more likely to increase motivation, reduce tardiness, absences, and improve behavior as well as test performance.

As part of their final project, the students delivered an emotional PowerPoint presentation to their principal, Dr. Ian Roberts, which combined images the students had taken throughout the semester that illustrated their argument as to why their high school should offer more electives.

This Thursday’s exhibit marks the culmination of their semester-long project.

Printing was donated by Vivid S0lutions DC Print Lab, a fine arts printing facility located in the heart of historic Anacostia.

The exhibition is located at the Academies at Anacostia, 1601 16th Street SE, South Building, Room S105.
