Event: Saturday, December 13 from 11am to 7pm
The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) announces that it will once again host a Winter Performance Festival & Arts Showcase, highlighting the many diverse art forms presented here at CHAW; along with our talented, engaged, and creative students and faculty. The showcase features CHAW students of all ages and teachers from every corner of the building—there is something for everyone! A ceramics and jewelry sale provides an excellent opportunity to buy local crafts for holiday gifts; our adult student gallery show opening highlights the work of visual artists in a happy hour setting with wine and cheese; and the many performances throughout the day present plenty of opportunities to watch, appreciate, and create art.
“CHAW is very pleased to present the Winter Festival again this year. At this time of year in particular, it is important to us to take a moment to thank and celebrate the students and faculty who actively contribute to CHAW’s work and mission of building community through the arts,” said Executive Director Jill Strachan. “The Festival is a perfect opportunity to come together in an open space to share, play, and connect.”
CHAW will be open all day, from 11am to 5pm, for drop-in activities. At 2pm, Faction of Fools Theatre Company presents a special benefit matinee performance of their current production, “The Great One-Man Commedia Epic,” with proceeds going to the Homeless Children’s Playtime Project, a CHAW partner and important community leader in advocating for homeless children.
The Adult Student Visual Art Show opening reception will take place 5:30-7pm, and will feature students working in a variety of media. The show is open to all current adult visual arts students and is not juried, but there will be awards for excellence selected and presented by judge Eric Westbrook, a professional artist, illustrator, and instructor living and working in Washington, DC. One of these awards will be the Helen Wade Carey Work on Paper Prize, named in honor of long-time CHAW watercolor student and art-lover Helen Carey.
