The Median presents Countenance, a pop-up portraiture show featuring photography, paintings, and illustrations by six dynamic 2-D artists in the Washington, D.C. area. Organized by emerging East City artists David Ibata, Danielle Scruggs, and alice wonder, Countenance, which opens on Friday, November 15 and runs through Sunday, November 17, promises to be a dynamic installation of representational art.

Countenance features work by renown photographer, printmaker, and Howard University professor Michael B. Platt; photographer and archivist Yodith Dammlash; oil pastel illustrator and Corcoran College MFA candidate Carlos Edmunds; painter David Ibata, who was most recently included in the Words, Beats, and Life-sponsored exhibit “Crowns” at The Fridge Gallery; photographer Danielle Scruggs, who recently exhibited at the 2013 (e)merge art fair; and multidisciplinary visual artist alice wonder.

The works featured in Countenance highlight the intimacy and immediacy that comes from creating a portrait, whether it is a piece exploring the face and gestures of a beloved family member, a self-portrait that serves as a personal visual memoir and attempts to probe what the “self” actually means, or paintings that seamlessly blend 17th-century technique with 21st- century sensibilities.

The opening reception will also feature a special set by DJ Underdog, one of the most innovative and in-demand DJs currently working in the District.

Open gallery hours during the pop-up show will be November 16th and 17th, 12pm to 5pm.

The Median is located at 5614 8th St. NW. For more information, please email [email protected] or [email protected]
