CulturalDC’s Flashpoint Gallery is pleased to present Ben Tolman Civilized, on view February 27 – March 28, 2015. In his first solo exhibition at Flashpoint, Tolman examines our contemporary human habitat to reveal the peculiarities of the individual in relation to the larger culture.

In this series of drawings and sculpture, Tolman explores the constructed environments we create and inhabit and our relationship to each other within those spaces. “I am interested in how the spaces we build (or are built for us) limit us as well as offer us possibilities,” the artist says. Tolman’s intricately detailed environments press pause in a world speeding ahead in repetitive motions. With a lens into individual circumstances and social positioning, he juxtaposes the mundane patterns of everyday habits with the incredible complexities – and extraordinary strangeness – of life itself.

About the Artist
