Opening Reception: Thursday, September 7 from 5pm to 7pm
This exhibition is the first show in nearly a decade to showcase the Driskell Center’s expansive permanent collection of African American, African, and African Diasporic artworks. The Last Ten Years brings together objects and artworks from the last two centuries and showcases over 60 emerging, mid-career, unknown, and well-known artists. Almost every work in the show has never been shown at the Driskell Center, and the range of works and objects on display includes various media and cultures: paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramics, video, African objects, crafts, and more.
The Last Ten Years: In Focus will also feature archival materials selected from the David C. Driskell Center’s large archival holdings. These materials will illuminate the history of African American Art through letters, records, and ephemera.
This exhibition is also a chance for the Driskell Center to acknowledge the many wonderful donors who have contributed to the growth of the collection over the last decade. The collection has grown from around 100 to over 1,500 objects in that time. It is also a chance for the Center to reflect on its mission, collection, and curation strategies.
