About the Artist:
Originally from Kensington, MD, Ellen has lived and worked in the Washington, DC area most of her life. She studied art at the University of Wisconsin and earned a B.A. in Studio Art from the University of Maryland. Ellen teaches life drawing and oil painting at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop and served on the steering committee of the Capitol Hill Art League for five years, chairing it for two.

Artist’s Statement:
“Much of my recent work is the re-interpretation of fables, fairytales, short stories and poems in pastel on paper. Friends are my models and collaborators, and finding appropriate or amusing props and costumes is a treasure hunt. I create images from stories, and often, as the paintings develop, I imagine changes to the story lines.

Mr. McGregor from Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter catches Peter and chooses to raise him as his son rather than eating him in a rabbit pie. The Little Mermaid is burdened by large, fuchsia flippers when what she really wants to wear are stylish, high-heeled shoes.

In my work I want a surface that shimmers with color and energy. Each painting begins with a detailed drawing. Then, painting with very soft pastel, I build layers of color loosely contained within coloring book-like outlines. The finished paintings have the energy and movement of vividly colored gesture drawings.”

The Project space is located in the Pierce School Lofts at 1375 Maryland Avenue, NE, in the H Street Arts and Entertainment District. For further information, or to schedule an appointment, please contact Geoff Ault, the Project’s curator, at (202) 744.6439 or by email at [email protected]
