The Margaret W. & Joseph L. Fisher Art Gallery at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center at Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria Campus will open its second show of the 2017 season on March 3 with the collection Theme & Variations by artist Sally Canzoneri. The art show will be on display through April 13 with an artist’s reception scheduled for 2pm to 4pm Saturday, March 25.

In this exhibit, Canzoneri used a small number of digital photographs she took near the Old Street tube stop in London to create a variety of two- and three-dimensional paper works. These include prints, sculptural artist books and lenticular pictures. In lenticular pictures, viewers see one image from one side of the piece and a second image from the other side. Walking by, viewers see a transition from one image to the other. Canzoneri uses an old technique with folded paper to create these pictures.

“For past exhibitions, I’ve created collections of pieces around a theme. This time, I worked more like a composer taking a melody and creating variations on it,” Canzoneri said. “The Old Street pictures form the ‘melody’ of the exhibit, with the artworks being the variations.”

Canzoneri grew up in rural Vermont and has previously lived in Minnesota and Illinois. She now resides in Washington, DC, with her husband, daughter and their three-legged dog. She studied with internationally-recognized book artists including Hedi Kyle, Keith Smith and Cristina Balbiano d’Aramengo. Since 2013, she has shown her work in a number of group and solo shows in the DC metro area and Vermont.
