Judas Recendez and Gallery 102 present A Mirepoix, an exhibition of works that encompass concepts that scope family, military and the social exchange that the artist and society has with materials. A mirepoix is a staple in cooking that consists of a mixture of onions, carrots, and celery sautéed in butter. Recendez translates this culinary technique with readymade materials to create an interpretation for our contemporary world. Presenting in the gallery is a culmination of two years of critical thinking from his thesis works in mix media, sculptures, and aromas that invoke memories.

Before entering the MFA program at George Washington University, Judas Recendez grew up in the Central San Joaquin Valley of California. In 2002, he joined the military as an infantry soldier. Mr. Recendez was stationed in Germany as part of 1st Armored Division 2nd Battalion 6th Infantry and served in Operation Iraqi and Operation Enduring Freedom. During a patrol his team came under attack tragically killing the vehicle commander and wounding the entire crew. Mr. Recendez suffered a tragic bilateral below knee amputation in the field. Stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Mr. Recendez would recover with intensive rehabilitation.  Thereafter, Mr. Recendez retired from the military, returned to California and married Kristine McClure. In 2010 he attended the Corcoran College of Art + Design and studied abroad at The Burren College of Art in Ireland. Mr. Recendez graduated from the Corcoran in 2013 with a Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Art with a Concentration in Ceramics.
