HEMPHILL announces the project, Steven Cushner at 1700L, ongoing through December 31, 2014.
Steven Cushner expressed his interest in “changing things up”, working outside of his studio, and tackling a canvas larger than his studio could accommodate. So we began a search for a large temporary studio space. In early November, Cushner moved into 1700 L Street NW. He is now at home in the space and has begun work on three large paintings simultaneously. The raw commercial space, formerly a florist shop, has windows on two sides allowing passersby to view the completed work from both 17th and L Streets.
Creating an effective artwork at a large size is an ambition artists have pursued throughout history. In more than a few cases, the masters of the past established their place in history and our memories through conquering large scale works. We are excited to see what Cushner accomplishes at 1700 L Street.
