Neglected Weed at Honfleur Gallery
by Al Burts
October 20 – November 24
Returning to the galleries of Anacostia, Al Burts work seizes a range of emotions from the quiet beauty that only age gives, to the absolute innocence of youth. Neglected Weed is a series of large scale portraits in ballpoint, colored pencil and charcoal on wood and acid-free paper. Burts presents an antithetical approach to the usually flattering intentions of portraiture. He looks to show homelessness and untamed non-traditional images in a manner of dignity.

About the Artist:
Al Burts is a Gulf War veteran and alumnus of Duke Ellington School of Arts with over 10 years of experience. The award-winning artist studied fashion illustration at Virginia Commonwealth University and summer drawing at The Corcoran School of the Arts. A retiree of the National Gallery of Arts Burts has illustrated three children’s books, and his work can be found in the private collections of Tom Joyner, Peggy Cooper Cafritz and University of Maryland University College to name a few.

THE ENDURING PROJECTION at Vivid Solutions Gallery
Billy Colbert
October 20 – November 24
THE ENDURING PROJECTION deals with the depiction of African Americans throughout history and the challenges people of color have endured in controlling their image in print and film. Colbert will convert the new Vivid Solutions Gallery into an archival/anthropological environment which will lead viewers through history and expose the negative propaganda that has been placed upon African Americans.

About the Artist:
Billy Colbert is a multi-award-winning artist and professor. In 1999-2000 Colbert was awarded Best in Show at the Carroll Harris Simms National Black Arts Biennial. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Graphic Design from Frostburg State University and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Delaware, where he was a Presidential Fellow. With over 20 years of solo exhibits, twenty-four group shows, and several curated exhibitions Colbert has been called upon as a guest speaker and panelist for engagements throughout the mid Atlantic region. He is currently a professor of New Media at Delaware State University.

Colbert’s work examines the cognitive dissonance in popular culture and celebrates the unsung contributors to American culture. His works can be found in fifty-five private collections across the world and nearly twenty public collections, including the Wold Bank, University of Wisconsin at Madison, Washington Convention Center, the National Academy of Sciences and the African American Museum in Dallas.
