Honfleur Gallery presents Under Pressure, a solo exhibition by Maryland-based painter Rush Baker. The exhibit of new works opens Friday, May 8, 2015 at Honfleur Gallery, with a reception with the artist from 6-8 p.m. Baker will give an artist talk on Saturday, May 30 at 1 p.m.

Degrading urban environments, the spectacle of war, and political unrest are among the chaotic influences Baker brings to his canvasses. Additional points of reference include the writings of Octavia Butler, Black abstraction, the New York School, and Russian Constructivism. These myriad ideas shape Baker’s studio practice, characterized by a sense of lawlessness similar to that of the subjects that fascinate him. His paintings mix traditional media with building materials in complex compositions that evoke landscapes, real and feared.

Rush Baker is a painter balancing his time between the studio, as a Gallery Manager at the Maryland National Park and Planning Commission, as a Prince George’s County Democratic Central Committee Member, and as a long-time arts educator. Before joining M-NCPPC, Baker taught courses at the University of Maryland – College Park, The Corcoran College of Art, and at Yale University as a graduate student.

Baker has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally, including solo shows at Scaramouche Gallery and The Cooper Union in New York City, and group shows at the G. R. N’ Namdi Gallery in Detroit, MoCADA in Brooklyn, The Reginald Ingraham Gallery in Los Angeles, Motus Fort and Koki Arts in Tokyo, Bowie State University, and Yale University.

In 2012, Baker graduated with a MFA from Yale University and received the Elizabeth Canfield Hicks Award for outstanding achievement in drawing and painting. He earned his BFA from The Cooper Union for Advancement of Science and Art in 2009 and received the Jack Steward Memorial Prize for excellence in painting.
