A photographer, with camera in tow, sets out into the world to discover, uncover, or insert perspectives. Cultivating a focus that they reveal image by image.

UK street photographer, Matt Stuart’s photographs reflect his fascination with how people live their lives and how strange and unusual life can be. One of his favorite quotes by G.K. Chesterton is kept in mind while he masterfully mixes classic street photography with a humor that hinges on the intersections of these fascinations, “Humor can get in under the door while seriousness is still fumbling at the handle.”

Taking on the unique manner of humor to remind viewers, and himself, not to take things too seriously Stuart utilizes the honesty of a genuine moment in the hopes of burrowing deep into the viewers memories. Yet, it is the appeal of the new that is burrowed deep into his own mind, which keeps Stuart coming back to the street, scanning through millions of exciting permutations to discover the people and places amid constant change. Each time Stuart walks out with his camera he is in search of these humorous juxtapositions. It is this keen intelligence that elevates his work. A focus that draws our eye, but connects to the quality of our own experience of observations out in the world. Reminding us to never become blind to what is really going on about us.

About the Artists
Matt Stuart is a street photographer born in Harrow, North West London, in 1974. Stuart’s father introduced him to photography, handing over books by Robert Frank & Henri Cartier-Bresson. Ever since then, photography has been his overriding passion. Stuart learned about the technical aspects of photography by assisting a photographer for 3 years, has been shooting on the streets for the last 18 years, and with Leica cameras since 1996. Stuart’s work images have been part of numerous solo & group exhibitions and has been included in “Street Photography Now” published by Thames & Hudson in 2010. He is a member of the international street photography collective, iN-PUBLIC.
