Through September 21.

J Jordan Bruns is a local artist working in mixed media. He searches for balance in his paintings, focused on discovering the complements in opposite forces and showing their awe-inspiring beauty. In his work, the contrary forces sometimes exist independent of one another, dueling from opposite sides of the surface.

More frequently, however, the foils become intertwined, indistinguishable and connected. For Bruns, balancing opposites begins in the creation process by layering non-controllable paint applications like pouring and dripping with more measured techniques such as classical oil practices and hand cut stenciling. Balance is explored even further in the mix of mediums used to create his paintings.

Bruns masterfully combines shellac, polyurethane, and spray paint to create chaos while maintaining a sense of order with acrylic, ink, and oil paint. As the creation progresses, Bruns establishes a dialog between the painting and himself, coaxing, but not dictating the imagery to communicate dualities of triumph vs. tragedy, light vs. darkness and most importantly order vs. chaos.
