Event: Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15 from 12pm to 5pm
On the afternoons of May 14th and 15th tour working art studios, in and around the Dupont Circle, Logan Circle, U Street and Shaw neighborhoods, better known as Mid City. Visitors can hop from one studio to another within vibrant Mid City and witness an expansive offering of art and culture by the city’s most-talented and creative artists. This bi-annual event, now in its 12th year, offers visitors a rare portal into the artists’ creative habitat and an opportunity for the public to participate in the District’s dynamic and diverse arts community. Each studio is unique and locations range from retail spaces, old carriage houses, spare bedrooms, apartments to basements. The participating artists represent a great diversity of work, including drawings, sculptures, paintings, prints, photographs and mixed media.
Open Studios is free and offers self-guided and guided tours. The self-guided tour is an open format that has proven to be an ideal way to encourage dialogue between artists and enthusiasts allowing visitors to gain firsthand knowledge about the creative process. Additionally local curators and artists will lead guided tours to select studios during the Open Studios weekend. The guided tours are on a first-come, first-serve basis and will help familiarize participants with the works in a conversational setting. These free guided tours must be reserved in advance. To reserve a tour and to download their map, visit the MCA website (www.midcityartists.com).
MCA is a distinct and talented group of more than 35 professional artists who have come together to promote their work and to create an artists’ community in the central part of the nation’s capital. This spring, we have two new members Stephen Benedicto, a multi-media artist and sculptor Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg. Mid City is a hub of real estate development with soaring property values, new condos, trendy shops and restaurants. MCA studios have added to the quality of life in the rapidly growing retail and commercial center of the city by infusing the neighborhood with authenticity, creativity and economic activity.
Member artists are not only active within Mid City but also regionally and internationally. Glass artist Robert Wiener is exhibiting at the Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center (through May 15th), painter Scott Brooks is exhibiting at beinArt Gallery in Australia (through April 26th) and painter Brian Petro has recently installed 11 works at MINT located at Florida Avenue and California Street, NW (art work will rotated through September).
