Opening Reception: Friday, June 10 from 7pm to 9pm
The ultimate goal of Melissa Burley’s work is to elevate both man-made and recycled materials to a level that suggests that there is beauty in life after death and open the eyes of others to consider their role in the preservation of our earth. The main base of the frame of her work is built of wood and metal while the interior components consist of halogen or LED lighting and natural, reclaimed, recycled, and man-made materials. The combination of these materials and lighting creates shadows on the surrounding wall surfaces and floors where the sculpture is displayed.
Melissa has exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally in group and solo exhibitions receiving various grants and awards. For 16 years, she has been a resident artist at the Montpelier Arts Center in Laurel, MD. Melissa holds a BFA degree from the University of Maryland in sculpture. She lives in Laurel, MD and is employed as a professional art handler for Artex in Landover, MD.
