This November, the shows at Honfleur Gallery and Vivid Solutions Gallery pose questions about essential aspects of painting and photography, respectively. Volume at Honfleur Gallery presents sculptural paintings and a suite of monotypes by Sheila Crider. PHOTOBOOK at Vivid Solutions Gallery showcases seven artist books that feature photography in varying ways, along with prints of photographs found in the books. Both exhibits open on Friday, November 7, 2014 with receptions with the artists from 6pm to 8pm. Sheila Crider will give an artist talk a week after the opening, on Saturday, November 15 at 2pm.

Volume at Honfleur Gallery presents sculptural paintings and monotypes by Sheila Crider, an artist who has lived east of the Anacostia River for most of her life. Crider’s practice focuses on making objects that challenge notions of decorative and fine art, questioning what real value and purpose these objects and “the artist” serve in the 21st century. Her output is centered by study of the varied languages of art movements since Modernism to construct contemporary pictures using texture, pattern, line, color, form, sequence, and, now, volume, with a goal of integrating image, object, and frame. Some of Crider’s recent projects include public art for the St. Elizabeths’ East Redevelopment Project, and the Community of Hope Conway Clinic in Washington, DC. Recent group exhibitions include the Kreeger Museum and the Katzen Gallery (American University) in Washington, UMUC Gallery in Greenbelt, and Gallery Molly Krom in New York. She has participated in many artists residencies nationally and internationally, including the Vermont Studio Center, Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France, and the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. Her work is featured in the spring 2014 issue of Studio Visit Magazine, #25. She lives and works in Washington, DC.

At Vivid Solutions Gallery, PHOTOBOOK brings together diverse book projects and photographs from those books in an exhibition that asks how the the presentation of a photographic image influences its effect on the viewer. How do we consider an image seen in a book that we hold as opposed to a photograph in a frame hanging on a wall? The exhibit presents seven books and 12 prints selected from an open call. Subject matter and book styles vary among the selected projects; the show will include idiosyncratic documentary style photography alongside black and white still lives, and traditionally bound books next to books that play with the formal conventions of the medium. PHOTOBOOK includes books and photographs by: Anna Agoston (Brooklyn, NY), Jordan Baumgarten (Philadelphia, PA), Leda Black (Washington, DC), Kristin Gudbransdottir (Falls Church, VA), Jay Turner Frey Seawell (Washington, DC), Tatiana Shukhin (Takoma Park, MD), and Luke Strosnider (Chicago, IL).

Opening receptions for both Volume at Honfleur Gallery and PHOTOBOOK at Vivid Solutions Gallery will take place on Friday, November 7, 2014 from 6-9 p.m. Sheila Crider will give an artist talk on Saturday, November 15 at 2 p.m. Both exhibitions run through December 19, 2014.
