Opening Reception: Saturday, January 25 from 6pm to 8pm

Chris Anthony’s Venice Series continues his exploration into the photograph as open ended narrative. As in his earlier work, specifically the Victims and Avengers series, Anthony crafts a scene, similar to a stage production, where the viewer is given the actor and a selection of props. Relationships are made within the scene and a “play” develops in which the viewer becomes the playwright.

In the Venice Series, Anthony exchanges the traditional notion of a wooded stage and painted backdrop for the shoreline and sky. His players perform in the water, just out of reach of the incoming waves. They interact and execute various actions: ride a bicycle, play an instrument, sweep the water with a broom, all without concern of their environment. Anthony’s underlying theme is a society that has developed in and on water. Venice, carrying a double meaning calling reference to Venice Italy and Venice Beach, California, where the series was photographed.

Anthony’s images are playful and often incorporate a solitary figure. His subtle usage of color contrasts the painterly greyness of a background sky and sea. Swashes of bright reds and yellows are worn by his subjects. Anthony styles his characters in a manner of dress that crosses the boundary of retro-uniform fashion, somewhat post-apocalyptic in design, yet akin to a futuristic fashion layout.

Chris Anthony was born in Sweden and now lives and works in Los Angeles. He is a filmmaker and photographer. His current book, Seas Without a Shore was released in 2013.
