Studio 1469 with Aether Art Projects presents Surface Ten, a group show of local visual artists Caroline Battle, Amy Hughes Braden, Thom Flynn, Aaron Jordan Hughes, LA Johnson, Becca Kallem, Sally Kauffman, and Jordan Hamlett Sanders, co-curated by Eames Armstrong, Melinda Diachenko, and Mandy Lineweber.
Surface Ten considers three primary actions: the use of illusionistic space to render depth, activation of a gestural plane through mark making across a canvas, and the expansion of painterly work into the inhabited world of the audience. It is surface the noun, a site, the topmost layer, a skin, a boundary, and it means surface the verb, moving towards and through that boundary, emerging from the unseen, moving from the hidden to the visible.
Co-curated by Eames Armstrong, Melinda Diachenko, and Mandy Lineweber, Surface Ten is comprised of layers, pigment, accumulation, indentation, memories, stretcher bars, ink, paper, traditions, finds, and actions. The works touch familiarity and exist somewhere just before or just beyond what might be expected. Conceived initially as a painting show, the exhibition grew and shifted to become a collection of paint, installation, and printmaking. Participating artists are Caroline Battle, Amy Hughes Braden, Thom Flynn, Aaron Jordan Hughes, LA Johnson, Becca Kallem, Sally Kauffman, and Jordan Hamlett Sanders.
The public opening reception will be on Friday, August 8. There will be an open conversation about surfaces in general and the work on view on Friday, August 29, curators and some exhibiting artists will be in attendance, followed by a closing party. Additional artists doing performances at the closing party will be announced.
