 |OPENING|

Opening Reception Sunday, May 6, from 5 to 8 pm.

Fact from Fiction is an exploration of Cornett’s fascination with the imaginary as real—the creation of facts from manufactured fictions.

These chalk pastel narratives—interpretations of dreams, fairytales and myths—are explorations of archtypes as explanations of contemporary life. The lines between humans and beasts blur in this work, animals are anthropomorphized and people dehumanized in service of the message.

Unlike the good and evil characters in Disney fairytales, Cornett’s straddle a line between innocence and menace. The ogre crouches to spring, but does so in gorgeous, shiney curls. The headless witch and her pig companion seem less threatening than pleased with themselves as they lope along. Evil lurks around the corner in these pastels. In the signature piece, Toad Dance, it is unclear if the songstress is calling toads to her, or trying to keep them from attacking. Disturbing and ambiguous, these colorful and cheery pastels lure the viewer into a dark and icky place.

The show runs from May 6 to May 27, 2012.

The Corner Store is located at 900 South Carolina Avenue, SE Washington, DC.

This work will be on view during regularly scheduled events at The Corner Store and by appointment. For information about The Corner Store schedule, go to www.cornerstorearts.org or call 202.544.5807.
