Opening Reception: Saturday, March 14 from 6pm to 8pm

Using Kafka’s parable Before the Law as a point of origin, the works presented explore the tensions between absolutism and relativity. The parable appears in Kafka’s book The Trial, which celebrates its centennial anniversary this year. Embodying the story’s tale of a man’s untenable pursuit to understand Law and its complications, the artists explore the malleable relationships between sounds, images and their forms.

The opening night of Before the Law will feature a performance by Slaveya, a women’s vocal ensemble specializing in Balkan traditional music, based in Washington, DC. They will perform live versions of the soundtrack that accompanies Jane & Raúl’s video installation.
