VisArts presents recent sculpture by Rob Hackett in the Common Ground Gallery from June 12 to July 12.  A reception and artist talk is scheduled for June 12 from 7pm to 9pm.

With simple everyday construction materials and a minimalist sensitivity to craft and forms, Rob Hackett’s large-scale sculptural installation in the Common Ground Gallery doesn’t just sit in space. It navigates the site with subtle, tense, contradictory elegance.

Large wooden rectangles appear to be threaded on lines of cable that span opposing walls. More lines of cable take off at angles, engaging other walls, heading up to the ceiling and down to the floor. Another glance and the wooden rectangles look like they are being stretched into place by the cables. The logic of his “systems” seems apparent until the beginning, middle, and end shift places. The work appears to be both light and heavy; sometimes more like a drawing in air than a sculpture. Hackett utilizes many of the elements that are paramount to architecture; hard angles, flat surfaces, and parallel lines. These elements, paired with a sensitive understanding of the site, address the relationship and tension between the physical and the implied, finding a balance between the two.
