Reception and Artist Talk:  Friday, July 24 from 7pm to 9pm

VisArts presents re:build a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Bobby Coleman in the Common Ground Gallery from July 15 to August 16.  A reception and artist talk is scheduled for July 24 from 7 to 9 p.m.

For Coleman, painting is a process of improvisational building. It is an opportunity to start fresh and simply, but grow in complexity. Ghostly reminders of the marks and decisions that came before whisper beneath a translucent layer or burst back assertively to the surface.  Wood is bolted onto the painted surface or supports are cut away. Vivid color, shapes, lines and symbols throb with a chaotic yet positive urban beat in his deeply layered compositions. Coleman’s paintings are sites for construction and demolition. They carry the jangle of thought, action and memory.

About the Artist: Bobby Coleman is an artist/painter living and working in Baltimore, MD. He earned his BFA in Studio Art from McDaniel College in Westminster, MD and his MFA in Painting from American University in Washington, D.C. Coleman’s work has been exhibited in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Detroit, California, and Ohio. He was a Semi-Finalist for the Bethesda Painting Award in 2011 and a finalist for the William and Dorothy Yeck Young Painter’s Award in 2014.
