Opening Reception: Saturday, January 9 from 6pm to 8pm
Other Worlds, Other Stories features ten contemporary artists who use space exploration like a funhouse mirror—in which American dreams of escape, conquest, and adventure cast unfamiliar reflections. These artists dissect our relationship to outer space with a wide range of approaches: from traditional painted images of distant worlds; to works of historical fiction illustrated with digital photography and collage; to interactive performances in a test kitchen for astronauts. Together, these works open a conversation about the heady intermingling of fantasy, art, and science that kicked off the space race in the twentieth century and still defines the US space program today.
The artists in Other Worlds, Other Stories take all three of these viewpoints: illustrating the realities of space exploration and the cosmos as we know it now; challenging viewers to consider what the future might hold; and asking thorny questions about what space travel really means for life on Earth.
Exhibited artists include: Adam Fung, Felipe Goncalves, Gray Lamb, Casey Johnson, Heidi Neilson and Douglas Paulson, Roxana Pérez-Méndez, Jefferson Pinder, Michael A. Robinson, Steve Strawn, and Lucy West.
The exhibition will be at 2124 8TH St. NW. For more information visit www.wpadc.org/events.
