ARCH Development Corporation is a twenty year old non-profit based in Washington DC that has been a driving force in promoting the arts and cultural revitalization of the Anacostia community. ADC believes that, in collaboration with other community groups, arts and cultural activities will not only support the individual artist, but it will fuel economic growth while providing programming for residents that is currently unavailable.

Anacostia is a vibrant, historic African-American neighborhood, located just east of the Anacostia River. The area originally named after its Native American ancestors, dates back to 1607. An area full of life and culture, the Anacostia community is home to the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site and the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum, a Smithsonian Museum.

Honfleur Gallery's Annual East of the River exhibit on Good Hope Road SE. Honfleur focuses on contemporary art by local, national and international artists.

In an effort to continue to cultivate this history, “Art Breathes Life” is the slogan ARCH DC promotes as it emphasizes that properly organized facilities and development programs designed to attract artists, performing arts groups, theater companies and other creative community-based organizations can serve as the engine for neighborhood economic development. Through all of ARCH’s facilities, this slogan is the driving force and catalyst that bonds together the mission of creating a community that flourishes through the arts.

Since its inception, ARCH has created various projects symbolic of the ‘Art Breathes Life’ campaign and the building of a creative economy. Some examples include: The Hive, a business incubator that provides affordable office space and is also a one-stop-shop for entrepreneurial and business training for East of the River and DC small businesses and artists; Blank Space SE, the newest creative rental space available for groups to host an exhibition or workshop; Honfleur Gallery, a contemporary fine arts gallery featuring a diverse array of socially minded works; The East of the River show, an annual show hosted and created by the Honfleur Gallery that exhibits works only from Ward 7/8 resident artists; The Gallery at Vivid Solutions/Digital Print Lab, which houses both a photography exhibition space and state of the art digital print lab; Eat Shop Live Anacostia, a neighborhood marketing and empowerment campaign designed specifically by a resident of Anacostia, for Anacostia.

Currently, ARCH DC has a plethora of services tailored towards the community, some of which are the exhibition by Ben Skinner displayed at the Honfleur Gallery, which features site-specific works inspired by the Anacostia neighborhood. ARCH also offers gallery tours to school and youth groups, hands-on artist led workshops, high-end digital printing, a concert series, an artist residency program, and the prized annual East of the River show which features juried works from local residential artists.

Through working with the community ARCH has been a catalyst for new art and creative economic businesses to move into Anacostia, educate and train workers for the resultant jobs and develop affordable, energy efficient housing for residents. By continuing to promote the creative economy and bridge social divides, ARCH will be able to endure and carry on its tradition of truly fostering an environment where “Art Breathes Life”.
