Opening Reception: Saturday January 8, 2011 starting at 6pm
Capitol Hill’s non-profit art gallery and performance space The Corner Store will host local musician Diana Quinn’s solo show of mixed media paintings in January, with the opening reception slated for January 8 at 6pm. Two of Quinn’s bands, the renowned country band Honky Tonk Confidential and the 60s girl group Fabulettes will perform at the reception.
Some of Quinn’s paintings use a technique she calls “bubble splash,” which she learned from Gary Reef, an Australian artist living in Norway. To get the highly textured effect, she layers house paint on canvas, then uses a hot air gun to form bubbles with the paint. She then layers acrylic and spray paint layers and sometimes adds twine or rusted pieces of metal, adds and then removes bitumen or asphaltum, then sprays mineral spirits or turpentine to create even more texture.
The show also includes a series of musicians’ portraits on board, done in a retro style with acrylics, spray paint, oil pastels, pencil and charcoal. The musicians represented are seminal figures in the classic country and R&B genres, including Ray Charles, Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline. Quinn’s bands will perform songs by the musicians depicted in the paintings. Quinn said, “I love classic rock and country music – that’s some of the music my bands play, and it only makes sense that I paint the musicians who made it. I create stencils using old promo photos and then alter the images using layers of paint, sandpaper, oil crayons, scissors, ice picks – whatever is handy.’
Honky Tonk Confidential has four albums and has won many accolades, including Washington Area Music Association awards (WAMMIES). The band has performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN, among other high profile venues. HTC often performs with CBS News chief Washington correspondent and host of Face the Nation Bob Schieffer, who wrote the lyrics to four of the songs on HTC’s last CD, Road Kill Stew and Other News.
The Fabulettes is a popular 60s girl group tribute band fronted by Quinn and two other women. Multiple WAMMIE nominees, the group is a favorite at local fairs and festivals and at the many swing dances in the area. The Fabulettes will be performing at The Corner Store at a special Valentine’s Day Dance on Saturday, February 12.
