Art and cuisine are intersecting this Valentine’s Day at Gateway Community Development Corporation’s (Gateway CDC) Third Annual Art of Dessert fundraiser.   The event launches Gateway CDC’s year-long campaign to highlight the Gateway Arts District as a thriving arts and entertainment hub.  The Gateway Arts District is home to more than 70 artist studios and galleries and over 350 professional artists.

The dessert filled event, being held at Busboys and Poets Hyattsville, will feature an Endless Dessert Reception, an Artist Talk hosted by Valerie Watson, and live jazz. Proceeds benefit the Gateway CDC – a non-profit that works to revitalize Mount Rainier, Brentwood and North Brentwood, MD through arts-based economic development.  Gateway CDC is co-manager of the Gateway Arts District.

Gateway CDC is encouraging supporters to break their New Year’s resolutions and eat as much chocolate as possible during the Endless Desert Reception.   The reception will feature live jazz performed by the University of Maryland Jazz Ensemble.  An Edible Design Contest will conclude the evening.  The winner of the design contest will receive a prize valued at $150 while the losers’ entries will be eaten.

Even those who can’t attend can still join the fun by donating their calories to the “Calories for Charity” drive.  Supporters are pledging to eat 100 calories of scrumptious desserts for every $5 raised.  While dieticians disagree, event organizers contend that since this is a charitable initiative, all calories consumed are automatically fat free!

During the Artist Talk, local watercolorist, Valerie Watson will discuss her large-scale watercolors including her Red Stilt-Walkers piece.  Red Stilt-Walkers depicts an ironic circumstance: artists who choose the joyful expression of Afro-Caribbean dance as a means for survival.  “The local artists are seen on the street corners, making music and dancing for extra money and spare change from tourists,” says Watson.

Gateway Community Development Corporation Executive Director, Michael Gumpert commented, “The Gateway Arts District is a community of artists and families partnering to create an economy that is fueled by the arts.  Art of Dessert is one of the many programs we are hosting this year that will shine a light on the great artists, families, business, and restaurants available in the Arts District.”
