Event: Saturday, June 6 from 11am to 8pm

This weekend, 55 artists will transform a parking lot into what might be the largest piece of public art in Washington, DC. The public is invited to watch the transformation take place at a Paint Jam event in NoMa on Saturday, June 6, from 11 am to 8 pm.

The NoMa BID is partnering with hip-hop nonprofit Words, Beats & Life to make the art happen. Rather than painting only on the walls, the artists will also be covering more than an acre on the ground, which will be visible to the 100,000 people who pass by the site daily on the Metro Red Line, MARC, VRE and Amtrak. Master Artists Pose 2 & Cita “CheLove” Sadeli will be creating two significant tribute murals on the history and future of NoMa. Then, 53 additional artists from DC, MD, VA, PA, NJ and NY will add to the canvas with a series of smaller murals.

“This is so cool,” said Robin-Eve Jasper, President of the NoMa Business Improvement District. “They’re bringing back the greyhound and giving some love to our bikes lanes, the NoMa water tower, and who knows what else. I can’t wait to see the finished product.”

Two weeks ago, Words, Beats & Life hosted a priming party with 65 volunteers who applied 230 gallons of paint to prime the ground and wall. The organization anticipates using another 200 gallons of paint to create the murals, including 500 cans of spray paint.

“It is exciting to bring new life to a space that has so much history,” said Mazi Mutafa, Executive Director of Words, Beats & Life. “We want to celebrate that history by making some history with the creativity of some of our region’s most talented fine artists, street artists and graffiti artists. This will be the largest mural in the city and the largest single piece of public art we have ever created.”
