The Fridge presents a solo show by Laura Elkins entitled White House Negligee, a selection from The White House Collection, self-portraits as American First Ladies.  The show runs through Sunday, January 30, 2010.

Elkins began The White House Collection in 2000 shortly after moving to Washington and touring the White House, where she saw the collection of official portraits of First Ladies. She began to use the First Ladies as a self-portrait device to explore our notions of femininity, sexuality, and aging through portraits of women, who, in reality, do not exist. Over the decade she has incorporated personal, current, political, and even catastrophic events into the work. In this latest development, the artist uses a dressing table as a prop to reflect large-scale, self-portraits as First Ladies in various states of négligée. One prop led to another, including “typical” dressing room accessories such as lipstick, lingerie, pistols, and the Pope. The exhibit will consist of both large and small oil paintings, as well as a limited-edition print series that will only be available during the exhibit.
