Saturday, February 7 – Art & Innovation Day Workshop
Sumi-E Inspired Ink Aliens is part of an ongoing series of collaborative workshops led by the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop in partnership with the DC Public Library—SE Branch. Art & Innovation Days present joint programming that taps into both the trend in libraries to provide “maker spaces” for their patrons and CHAW’s desire to support activities that demonstrate arts as a way of life for a lifetime. Based on Japanese Sumi Ink drawings, students will use straws instead of the traditional bamboo reed to experiment with form and line, ultimately creating undersea creatures, aliens, and insects using nothing more than breath and a drop or two of ink. The workshop will include an installation component and will illustrate for students how projects like this may be adapted based on resources they may find around the house – like straws and string, for example – thereby encouraging them to take what they’ve learned and apply a similar curiosity to other kinds of artmaking.

All workshops take place at the DC Public Library—SE Branch, located at 403 7th St., SE at the Eastern Market metro (orange/blue/silver lines) from 1:30-3:00pm.
Free and open to all ages, adults and children. For more information and to register, visit www.chaw.org, or call (202) 547-6839.
