Opening Reception: Saturday September 10 from 4pm to 7pm
Exhibition runs September 6 through September 24, 2011
SCRAP-DC presents their first exhibition, Making Meaning: Remember • Repurpose • Restore. They are partnering with The Center for Green Urbanism and The 9/11 Arts Project in support of their mission: to use the arts to connect our diverse community and to catalyze a citywide healing discourse.
That mission and SCRAP’s creative reuse directive are connected by the artists’ reflection on the theme “making meaning.” They exemplify William Cleveland’s quote: “Upheaval begets both crises and opportunity,” while also constructing something meaningful from items that others discard. The ingenious re-purposing of obsolete objects knows no geographic or cultural boundaries, and measures that care for our planet, like the arts, “have [a] profound ability to unite, uplift, teach, and transform.” By assembling together these works that use primarily recycled content, and by offering other programs to the public throughout the month, the organizers seek to keep the discussion going.
At the reception, there will be music by Cooking with Gas. Refreshments will be served, including sweets by Dessert Station. A collection bin for your scrappy donations will be available as well as hands-on reuse activity.
