BlackRock Center for the Arts, providing opportunities to explore, celebrate and engage in the arts, announces the appointment of Rula Jones as the new Gallery Director. Since graduating from Marymount Manhattan College, New York, NY, in 2000, Rula Jones has worked within several aspects in the fine arts, including exhibition, curatorial, and education.
Rula Jones is an interdisciplinary artist whose work centers around a single theme of identity. Her work incorporates intriguing juxtapositions to evoke dialogue on multiculturalism, internationalism, and humanism and explores paradoxes in an increasingly global society.
She has been awarded several awards, exhibitions and residencies nationally and internationally, including participation in Centre Pompidour, a neo-feminist residency in Northern France. Additionally, in 2020, she founded Gallery 115 as well as an artist in residence studio program at the Y Art Center in Frederick, Maryland.
Rula was born in Texas, raised in London and Washington DC and has lived in New York and Amsterdam. She currently lives in the Washington DC area and considers herself a community connector in the arts scene.
Says Lynn Andreas Arndt, CEO of BlackRock Center for the Arts, “We’re thrilled to have Rula’s expertise and artistic vision join the BlackRock Center for the Arts team. As a multicultural arts center, an important part of our vision is to offer interdisciplinary programming combining visual and performance arts. Rula brings a rich background to our Center, as an artist, curator, and educator. She will be key to achieving that vision and the future of BlackRock.
Jones has already added several arts-based workshops and educational opportunities to BlackRock’s educational department as well as completed an exhibit of her personal work at BlackRock Center for the Arts, Conversations with Myself. Click here for the catalog.
Says Jones’ of her appointment and her future direction of BlackRock’s Gallery, “As I look to the future and what we like to refer to as “our building year” with both of our galleries fully open to the public again, we hope to grow our Visual Arts programming to its potential. This will include a highly interdisciplinary and programmatic vision. A vision that is artist-centered, designed for both our direct and larger communities and above all, fundamentally collaborative and inclusive.
