Curating the Hirshhorn Anew for Global Influence

The Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden welcomes a new chief curator whose French-Canadian background offers a valued outsider’s perspective to this American institution with global intentions. Stéphan Aquin, a curator who approaches contemporary art with a scholar’s mind, understands the Hirshhorn’s potential in becoming an American center of international contemporary art know-how. Though the Hirshhorn’s exhibitions are on-par with leading European contemporary art institutions, Aquin understands the largest challenge to asserting the global impact of the Hirshhorn is federal funding.
