The week of July 6, 2020, HumanitiesDC awarded over $378,000 in emergency relief to humanities organizations in Washington DC to help them contend with the challenges they are facing due to the covid-19 pandemic. Funding for these grants has been provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act economic stabilization plan. HumanitiesDC selected the awardees competitively based on the applicant’s emphasis on the public humanities in their overall mission, their immediate needs created by the covid-19 pandemic, and the expected impact of the award on their organization and its constituents.

While most of the awardees will use the funds to pay for general operating expenses such as payroll, rent, and other administrative obligations, several will develop special projects to allow them to better engage with their constituents remotely. “It’s a privilege and honor to be able to support Washington, DC’s cultural community in this way,” said HumanitiesDC Interim Executive Director, Valerie Graff. “We are very aware of the existential threat the pandemic has presented to the city’s network of public humanities organizations, and are hopeful that these grants will allow for the continued documentation and preservation of the city’s stories.”
