The Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association recently completed its Annual Membership Jury. From this process, nine new artists were selected as Associate Members. Congratulations to: Natalie Abrams, Jennifer Allevato, Berit Estabrook, Patricia Howard, Melanie Kehoss,Patrick Sargent*, Irina Smirnoff, George Tkabladze, and Priscilla Young* for being selected as the Torpedo Factory Artist Class of 2018.
The Annual Membership Jury process is conducted in two phases. The first phase evaluates the digital images submitted with each application. Jason Gubbiotti, an international artist and curator, served as the Phase I juror. For Phase II, artists are placed into one of two groups: two-dimensional or three-dimensional work. Artist work is then anonymously evaluated, both individually and collectively, by all three jurors for that group. There are no quotas or recommendations given to the jurors by the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association.
For 2018, the jurors for two-dimensional jurors were: Gretchen Schermerhorn, Artistic Director at Pyramid Atlantic, Christopher Kardambikis, Assistant Professor and the Director of Navigation Press at George Mason University, and Cynthia Connolly, Special Projects Curator for Arlington County. The three-dimensional jurors were: Dagmar Painter, curator of Al Quds at The Jerusalem Fund, Janet Huddie, award-winning silversmith and artist, and Patrick Craig, Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, specializing in painting, drawing and mixed media.
The Newly Juried Artist exhibition, with works chosen by the jurors, is on display in Gallery 311 at the Torpedo Factory Art Center until April 12. There is a closing reception during the Second Thursday Art Night on April 12 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. This reception is open to the public, with no advance registration required.
