Material Woman looks at the possibilities and transformations of the essence of materials by ten artists. Shaping by the hand is ever present in weaving, sewing, bending, cutting, typing, forming – creating new life from inanimate matter.
The artists in Material Woman share an interest in exploration and transformation of everyday materials, some historically associated with feminine hands and some newly provocative and gender free. Each of the artists represented here is an alchemist who transforms the substance of daily life into something that is other, into the mysterious.
The artists are caught between the tensions of materiality and transformative rebirth. They instill life into and out of inanimate objects. Historically this was often done in community, in a circle of women. Healing flows within those circles – into each other, our families and into the community at large. This show celebrates the power of the feminine hand to our lives.
The Joan Hisaoka Gallery is located at 1632 U Street NW.
