Talk: Saturday, October 15 at 1:30pm

Join Portico Gallery for an Artist Talk with Tom Hill who will discuss the work in his current exhibition, Unnatural Desires in Natural Settings. The talk will take place both in the gallery and in the artist’s adjoining studio on Saturday, October 15th at 1:30 pm.

The work in this exhibition was inspired by a book about loggers in the early 20th century Pacific Northwest. The book – which led to reading several others about the lumber industry – included a focus on sexual relationships between timbermen in remote work camps and urban rooming houses.

Tom’s current process involves elements that include natural and found objects, fabric and craft supplies, display letters, scraps of wood and construction debris, dime store frames, souvenirs and keepsakes, images lifted from smut and advertising, and painted surfaces.

The work in this show is the culmination of decades of Tom’s diverse experience in art and design, including a fine arts practice that has been augmented with and influenced by work in window display, theatrical set- and prop-making, mural and decorative painting, nightclub decor, gallery and museum installation, and graphic design.

Free and open to the public. Coffee and cookies will be served.
