RESIDENCY OVERVIEW
Arlington Arts Center’s resident artist program provides subsidized studio space in a supportive environment that encourages interaction, dialogue, and exploration. The program gives artists the opportunity to develop their practice in a community with other artists and alongside AAC’s critically acclaimed exhibitions and extensive educational programs. All studios have excellent sunlight, work sinks, and high ceilings with 24-hour access, 365 days a year. Facilities include a shared lounge area, kitchen, and bathroom.

As members of AAC’s community, resident artists also contribute to the organization’s broader mission of connecting the public to contemporary art and artists. Although AAC’s studio spaces are closed to the public during normal hours, artists are expected to participate in open studios approximately six times a year for AAC’s public exhibition openings and other special events. Resident artists are also required to supervise the gallery for four hours each month, attend 4-6 resident/ staff meetings per year, participate in AAC’s annual fundraising event, and to engage in other community outreach activities. During a six-year term, each resident has the opportunity to initiate at least two exhibitions in AAC’s Wyatt Resident Artist Gallery. These can be solo exhibitions of the artist’s own work or group exhibitions that the artist organizes.

AAC’s long-term studios are available with a two-year lease, which can be renewed up to two times, resulting in a total potential residency term of up to six years. Leases will be considered for renewal based on artist studio usage, commitment to monthly service hours, participation in open studios, and community outreach.

SELECTION PROCESS
Contemporary visual artists working in all media are welcome to apply. The program is not designed for commercial artists. After an initial review by current resident artists and staff, AAC staff will conduct interviews with a final short list of candidates. Selection criteria will include artistic merit, potential for community engagement, and diversity of media and artistic representation.

Each application will remain on file for one calendar year and may be used for future studio openings within that timeframe. Incomplete applications or those with unpaid application fees will not be considered, and will be automatically disqualified. Completed applications with all required attachments must be submitted online. No mailed or emailed applications will be accepted. If you applied to the studio residency program within the past year and want to be considered for this opportunity, email exhibitions@arlingtonartscenter.org with “Include My Residency Application in 2019 Review” in the subject line.

The following studios will be available in late 2019 and early 2020. During the application process, applicants will be asked to indicate which specific studio they are interested in or, if they’re open to all three options, to rank their preference.
