EXTENDED Deadline: October 15, 2018
ART WATCH (ARTWATCHDC.com) is seeking participants to contribute “ancestor panels” to its second iteration of its project ONE HOUSE that will take place at Blackrock Center for the Arts Nov/Dec 2018.
ART WATCH is a collective of DMV artists who have gathered together to develop ways to use the power of visual communication to express their support for true democratic values, such as inclusion, tolerance, equality under the law, and stewardship of the environment.
The One House project embodies both resistance to the subversion of these values and the assertion of their importance and our adherence to them. The overriding principle is our vision for a country where we are united as one people rather than divided against each other by race, gender, class, religion, etc.
Each participant is given a 12″ square piece of plywood to dedicate to one of her/his ancestors who came to this country from elsewhere, whether voluntarily or involuntarily. Participants who are themselves immigrants should use the square for their own story. Since Native Americans were the first inhabitants of this land, they may honor any ancestor whose life story is important to them.
An underlying structure—a house—will be constructed. The completed squares will be attached to the outside of the structure, covering it completely. One House will also incorporate audio and video recordings of the contributing participants.
Note: The call is open to the general public and workshops will be provided to guide participants.
Eligibility: Open to all Maryland/Washington/Virginia residents.
Entry Fee: $20 to cover material costs
Deadline: September 15, 2018
