Summary
ArtsFairfax is seeking to commission an artist or artist team to produce a limited-edition arts map of Fairfax County, City of Fairfax, and City of Falls Church that we will present to the honorees of the 2022 Arts Awards.

Background Information

ArtsFairfax is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is designated as Fairfax County’s local arts agency. ArtsFairfax distributes County funds to support the arts and provides promotional and informational services to make the arts accessible to the public. We provide additional services and programs that are funded by the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts as well as by corporations, foundations, individuals, and civic organizations.

The Arts Awards bring business and community leaders together with elected officials to celebrate the extraordinary contributions of local artists, arts organizations, and the private sector. Honorees are selected by a review committee and celebrated at the annual Arts Awards luncheon. The 2022 Arts Awards will be held on October 28, 2022.

Each year, ArtsFairfax commissions an artist to create the awards that we present to the honorees during the Arts Awards luncheon. The following artists have created awards in recent years: ceramicist Bikki Stricker, sculptor Wayne Shiffelbein, glass artist David Barnes, multidisciplinary artist Rebecca Kamen, and sculptor JP Muller.

Artist Scope of Work
The selected artist/team will design a map of Fairfax County, City of Fairfax, and City of Falls Church that highlights the area’s major arts venues, organizations, and events, including Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, Workhouse Arts Center, Capital One Hall, George Mason University Center for the Arts, Ernst Cultural Center at Northern Virginia Community College, The Alden Theatre at McLean Community Center, Center Stage at Reston Community Center, a festival at Bull Run, arts disciplines including music, dance, chorus, theatre, film, visual arts, and literature/poetry. The map must include the ArtsFairfax logo, towns in the County, and integrate 3-4 of the most commonly spoken languages in Fairfax. ArtsFairfax will be responsible for matting and framing the prints. ArtsFairfax will own the rights to the artwork and ArtsFairfax may use the image for other purposes with proper credit to the artist/team. The artist will create a limited edition of 20 original prints on paper measuring between approximately 11” x 14” and 20” x 30” to be mutually agreed upon.

Project Goals

  • Celebrate the arts in Fairfax.
  • Provide a unique graphic representation of the arts in the County.

Budget
The artist/team will receive a total commission fee of $2,000. This fee will cover the design, materials, fabrication, rights to the image, and a high-resolution reproduction.

Visibility
The selected artist/team will receive two complimentary tickets to attend the 2022 Arts Awards at Capital One Hall on October 28 and will be recognized at the event from the podium and in the printed event program.
